Hey HN!
I built a browser-based decibel meter that lets you measure sound
levels without installing any apps or software.
The tool uses your device’s microphone to measure sound from 30-130 dB,
with A-weighting to match human hearing perception. It works on both
desktop and mobile browsers.
Key features:
– No installation required – runs entirely in the browser
– A-weighted measurements (standard for noise exposure)
– Educational content about sound levels and hearing protection
– Reference guide for common sound levels
– Privacy-focused: all processing is done locally, no audio is recorded
or transmitted
I originally made this because I wanted a quick way to check noise levels
at home and work without downloading yet another app. I added the
educational content after realizing many people don’t know safe exposure
times for different noise levels.
Technical notes: The accuracy depends on your device’s microphone quality.
For professional/legal use, you’d still need calibrated equipment, but
this should be good enough for everyday reference.
Would love to hear your feedback, especially from anyone who works with
audio or acoustics!
